Thermal Imaging FAQs
Common questions about heat loss surveys, what they show, and how they help

Thermal surveys help you see the invisible
Whether you're preparing for a retrofit, confused about cold rooms, or wondering if your insulation is working — thermal imaging provides instant clarity. Here are the most common questions we hear before and after a survey.
What exactly does thermal imaging show?
It shows temperature differences on surfaces — which reveal where heat is escaping, where insulation is missing, or where air is leaking. Warm areas appear as reds/yellows, while cold spots show as blues/purples.
Do I need it before I insulate?
It’s a smart move. It helps prioritise which areas need work and prevents unnecessary upgrades. We often do it before attic or wall insulation to guide where to spend.
Can it show if cavity wall insulation has failed?
Yes — if a section of cavity fill has settled, slumped or was never fully filled, thermal imaging will highlight the cold spots and patterns clearly.
Will it show air leaks too?
Yes — air leakage around windows, doors, pipework, sockets or attic hatches is often visible as cold streaks or hotspots, depending on season. We can recommend airtightness solutions based on the findings.
Is thermal imaging invasive or damaging?
No — it’s completely non-invasive. We use a handheld infrared camera, take surface readings, and provide a short visual report or walkthrough.
Can it help with damp or mould issues?
Yes — cold spots that attract condensation or are caused by thermal bridging can contribute to mould growth. We can use thermal images to confirm these areas.
How accurate is it?
It’s very effective — especially when there’s a good temperature contrast between indoors and outside. It’s not a full diagnostic tool but is excellent for guiding decisions.
Do I need to prepare the house beforehand?
We recommend heating the home normally before the appointment and keeping windows and doors closed. The bigger the indoor-outdoor temperature difference, the clearer the results.
Will I get a report?
Yes — we’ll explain findings in person and can provide a summary or key images depending on the service level booked. For SEAI-related work, we highlight what may affect your BER.
Is it useful after insulation is installed?
Yes — it’s a great way to verify that your new insulation is working and was installed correctly. We often do post-upgrade scans for peace of mind.
Still have questions?
We’ll talk you through what thermal imaging shows, what it doesn’t, and whether it’s the right next step before your energy upgrade or grant application.
