Room by room, question by question

What people ask before installing internal insulation

Internal wall insulation is often the best solution when external insulation isn't suitable — but it raises its own set of questions. This page covers what most homeowners want to know before going ahead, including impact on space, disruption, timelines and more.

What is internal wall insulation?

It’s a retrofit method where insulation boards or a stud frame with insulation are installed on the inside of your home’s exterior walls. This adds thermal performance without altering the outside of the house.

Is it SEAI grant-approved?

Yes — internal wall insulation qualifies for grant funding if your home meets the criteria. We'll confirm eligibility during your free survey.

Will it make my rooms smaller?

A small amount of space is lost — usually 5–10cm off each insulated wall. We aim to minimise this while achieving the right insulation depth.

How disruptive is it?

There's some internal disruption — radiators, skirting boards, sockets and switches are temporarily removed and refitted. The rooms are then replastered or dry-lined and ready for painting.

How long does it take?

It depends on the number of rooms. One room may take a day or two. A full house typically takes several days, scheduled to minimise inconvenience.

Do I need to move furniture out?

Yes — furniture should be cleared from the walls being insulated. We’ll advise in advance and work room-by-room if needed.

Can I insulate just one wall or room?

Yes — we often insulate cold sitting rooms, bedrooms or north-facing walls as standalone jobs. It can be done in phases too.

What finishes are available?

Most internal wall systems are finished with plasterboard and a skim coat. Once dry, it’s ready for painting or decorating like any other wall.

Is it suitable for old homes or cottages?

Yes — internal insulation is a great option for solid wall homes and cottages where you want to keep the exterior look. We’ll assess ventilation and moisture management as part of the survey.

Can I get a BER after the work?

Yes — we can arrange for a BER assessment after the installation is complete to reflect your improved energy rating and submit documentation if a grant is involved.

Still have questions?

We’ll cover everything during your free home survey — including what type of internal insulation suits your home, and how to minimise space loss and maximise grant value.
