External Wall Insulation FAQs
Your questions answered — from grant eligibility to finish details
Not sure if it’s right for your home?
Here’s what Irish homeowners usually ask
External wall insulation is a big upgrade with big benefits. But it also raises questions — about grant eligibility, wall types, timelines, and finish quality. This page covers the most common things people ask before booking.
What is external wall insulation?
It’s a system where rigid insulation boards are fixed to the outside of your home, then covered with a basecoat and weatherproof render. It improves heat retention, comfort, and your BER rating.
Is my home suitable?
We install external wall insulation on solid block, hollow block and cavity-extracted walls. We’ll assess suitability during your survey and confirm if EWI is the right option.
Can I get a grant?
Yes — SEAI offers grants up to €8,000 for detached homes, with scaled amounts for smaller properties. We’ll guide you through the application and issue all paperwork.
How long does the job take?
Most EWI projects take 5 to 7 working days, depending on house size and access. Weather conditions may affect drying time for the render finish.
Do you remove gutters or downpipes?
In most cases, yes. We temporarily remove and then refit gutters, downpipes, satellite dishes and external lights to allow for a clean, continuous install.
What does the finish look like?
We apply a mesh-reinforced render over the insulation, with colour options available. The result is a clean, modern finish that improves the look and value of your home.
Can you insulate one wall only?
Yes — we can insulate individual walls (e.g. north-facing) if a full wrap isn’t needed. We’ll discuss this during your survey. Partial grants may apply depending on area covered.
Does it affect window sills or doors?
Yes — we extend window sills and adjust door thresholds to suit the added wall thickness. Everything is detailed and finished neatly to look like part of the original house.
Is it suitable for bungalows?
Yes — EWI is ideal for single-storey homes with exposed walls and poor insulation. It’s a common retrofit for 1950s–1980s bungalows.
What insulation materials do you use?
We install NSAI-approved rigid board systems — usually EPS, Mineral Wool, or high-performance phenolic board — depending on the home and SEAI guidelines.
Still have questions?
We’ll answer everything during your free survey — including which system suits your home and how to maximise your grant.
