Insulation on the outside. Warmth on the inside.

External wall insulation for older and hard-to-treat homes

Many homes in Ireland lose a large amount of heat through solid walls, gable ends and poorly insulated external walls. External wall insulation (EWI) adds a continuous insulated layer to the outside of your home, reducing heat loss, improving comfort and giving the property a fresh new appearance.

Premier Insulations is an insulation company and SEAI-registered contractor, with experienced installers, fitters and contractors working on external wall insulation projects across Ireland. We work on houses, rental properties and selected commercial buildings.

On every project, we design the system around your building – wall type, moisture risk, finishes and details – so the insulation, weather protection and appearance all work together.

How external wall insulation works

External wall insulation adds a continuous layer of insulation to the outside of your walls, then covers it with a reinforced basecoat and decorative render. This reduces heat loss, protects the structure from weather and helps cut down on cold spots and condensation inside.

  • Continuous insulation layer – reduces heat loss through solid and cavity walls by wrapping the building envelope.
  • Improved comfort – warmer internal surfaces, fewer draughts and more even room temperatures.
  • New external finish – modern renders or traditional-style finishes, with colour and texture options to suit your home.
  • Less disruption inside – most of the work takes place outside, so there is no need to strip internal plaster or redecorate every room.
  • Helps with BER – properly designed external wall insulation can significantly improve your energy rating when combined with attic and other upgrades.

Our surveyors check wall types, existing finishes, overhangs, damp details and any planning considerations before recommending the right system for your home.

  • SEAI Grant Approved

Up to €8,000 in insulation grants available for eligible homes

  • Full Wrap System

Continuous insulation over external walls — no cold bridges

  • Durable Render Finish

Modern weatherproof finish, mesh-reinforced for long life

Built around your walls and finishes.

External wall insulation systems, finishes and details

Different homes need different external wall insulation solutions. We match the system to your wall type, exposure and desired finish, so the results look good and last.

  • Insulation boards – typically expanded polystyrene (EPS), mineral wool or other approved systems, chosen to suit your wall type and exposure.
  • Reinforced basecoat – embedded mesh to provide strength, impact resistance and crack control.
  • Decorative render – silicone, acrylic or mineral renders in a range of colours and textures, or finishes designed to match existing properties.
  • Detailing around openings – careful work around windows, doors, sills, vents and services to keep everything functional and weather-tight.
  • Plinth and roofline details – considered treatment of damp-proof course levels, plinths and eaves to manage rainwater and protect the system.

Before we start, we carry out a detailed survey, discuss your preferred look and check any planning considerations for your area.

Energy upgrades, BER and SEAI grants

For many homes, external wall insulation is part of a larger energy upgrade. Our energy upgrade services help you plan and deliver this in a structured way:

For grants and support schemes, we always follow SEAI’s current rules for homes in Ireland:

  • Grants overview – how SEAI grants fit into your upgrade project.
  • SEAI grants – types & amounts – current grant levels for insulation, heating and solar measures.
  • Insulation grants – support for attic, cavity, internal and external wall insulation.
  • Heat pump grants – funding towards qualifying air to water heat pump installations.
  • Solar PV grants – support for domestic solar PV systems on suitable roofs.
  • Heating controls grants – help with the cost of thermostats, zoning and time control.
  • Warmer Homes Scheme – fully funded energy upgrades for certain eligible homeowners. SEAI runs this scheme and appoints contractors directly; Premier Insulations can advise you and carry out additional works where required.

Premier Insulations is an SEAI-registered contractor for homes in Ireland. SEAI grants are only available for eligible properties in Ireland.

Windows, doors and detailing

External wall insulation needs to be carefully coordinated with windows, doors and existing finishes. We pay particular attention to reveals, sills, vents and services so everything remains weather-tight and easy to use.

  • Windows & doors – advice on how window and door upgrades fit with external wall insulation and other measures.

If you are planning to replace windows or doors, we can help you sequence the work so the insulation and new frames work together.

External wall insulation across Ireland

We carry out external wall insulation projects in towns and rural areas across Ireland, working on:

  • Solid wall houses and older properties with poor wall insulation.
  • Homes where internal insulation would be too disruptive or reduce room sizes.
  • Rental properties where fabric upgrades can help meet minimum standards.
  • Selected commercial and mixed-use buildings that need better comfort and lower running costs.

External wall insulation – quick answers

Is my home suitable for external wall insulation?

Many solid-wall homes, gable ends and hard-to-treat walls can benefit from external wall insulation. During a survey we check your wall type, existing finishes, overhangs, damp details and any planning considerations before confirming suitability.

Will external wall insulation change how my home looks?

Yes, external wall insulation adds a new finished layer to the outside of your home. You can usually choose from a range of colours and textures, and we can design details to suit the style of the property and neighbouring houses.

How disruptive is the work?

Most of the work takes place outside the house, so there is less disruption inside compared to internal wall insulation. There will be access scaffolding and some noise, but we plan the work to minimise the impact on your day-to-day routine.

Does external wall insulation help my BER rating?

External wall insulation can make a significant difference to your BER when designed and installed as part of a wider upgrade. Improving walls, attic insulation and heating controls together usually gives the best improvement in BER and comfort.

Can I get SEAI grants for external wall insulation?

If your home and planned works meet SEAI’s current criteria, you may be able to receive grants for external wall insulation as part of the insulation grants. We can explain the options and carry out qualifying work to SEAI standards.

How do I get started?

The easiest way to get started is to book a free survey or call us on 1800 64 64 10. We will inspect your walls, discuss finishes and details, and outline a recommended plan including any relevant SEAI grants.
