Attic Insulation – Frequently Asked Questions

✅ What are the current building regulation requirements for attic insulation?

Under current Irish building regulations, attics must achieve a U-value of 0.16 W/m²K. This is typically met by installing 300mm (12") of insulation.

🔝 Can I top up my existing attic insulation?

Yes. If you already have around 100mm (4") of insulation, we can top it up to the required 300mm depth using blown-in insulation. This improves thermal efficiency without the need to remove the existing layer.

💡 Can recessed lighting in the attic be covered?

No, recessed (low voltage) light fittings must remain ventilated to avoid overheating. Our team installs special isolation cylinders to safely enclose these lights while maintaining airflow and insulation effectiveness.

💧 Should my attic water tank be lagged?

Yes. Uninsulated water tanks are vulnerable to freezing in cold weather. We supply and fit custom lagging jackets that insulate all sides and the top of your water tank for maximum protection.

🪵 My attic is partially floored. What are my options?

If your attic floor is already laid: It must be lifted before insulation is installed, as compressing insulation reduces its effectiveness. After insulation, the flooring can be raised on timber battens to allow for full 300mm coverage underneath before relaying boards. Stored items should be temporarily removed prior to the installation.

🕑 How long does attic insulation take?

The entire process typically takes about 2-3 hours, depending on attic size and accessibility.

💶 Are there any grants available for attic insulation?

Yes. The SEAI (Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland) offers grants under the Home Energy Grants programme. Homeowners may be eligible for financial support depending on the property type and current insulation levels. For full details, visit: www.seai.ie

🛠️ Is the process messy or disruptive?

The process is usually quick, clean, and requires minimal disturbance. Most installations are done without any mess inside the living area.

🌿 What are the energy and cost benefits?

  • Proper attic insulation can:
  • Reduce heat loss by up to 35%
  • Save €400–€600 annually on heating bills
  • Potentially improves your Building Energy Rating (BER)

🏘️ Is attic insulation suitable for all homes?

Attic insulation is suitable for most homes built before 2006. If your property was built after that, it may already meet current standards, but we offer free surveys to confirm.
