Attic insulation explained

Got questions about insulating your attic?

This page covers the most common questions we get about attic insulation — from how it works, to grant eligibility, ventilation concerns, install time and more. If your question isn't listed, just ask our team.

How much heat is lost through the attic?

Up to 30% of a home’s heat can be lost through the roof if your attic isn’t properly insulated. Insulation helps trap heat inside and reduce bills.

What are the current attic insulation requirements?

Under Irish building regulations, attics must achieve a U-value of 0.16 W/m²K. This usually requires 300mm (12") of attic insulation. We install to meet or exceed this standard.

Can I top up my existing attic insulation?

Yes — if you already have around 100mm (4") of insulation, we can top it up to the required 300mm depth. This is a fast, cost-effective upgrade that doesn't require full removal of the existing layer.

What insulation types do you use?

We install rolled mineral wool in most attics. We also offer spray foam insulation where suitable — typically in tight or difficult spaces or where airtightness is important.

How long does attic insulation take?

Most installs take about 2–3 hours. If raised storage, hatch upgrades or spray foam are included, it may take up to one full day. We’ll confirm at survey.

Will I lose attic storage or access?

No. We install raised walkways and storage platforms so insulation maintains its full depth underneath. You'll still have safe access to key areas.

Can recessed lighting in the attic be covered?

No — recessed (low voltage) lights must remain ventilated. We install isolation cylinders (downlight covers) around them to allow airflow while maintaining insulation performance and safety.

Do I need attic ventilation?

Yes. Proper attic ventilation prevents condensation and protects insulation performance. We inspect airflow and install eaves baffles to keep vents clear where insulation might block them.

Is attic insulation covered by SEAI grants?

Yes — attic insulation is grant-eligible under SEAI’s Home Energy Grants. We are SEAI-registered and can guide you through the process and paperwork. See grant details.

Will there be disruption or mess?

Very little. We use dust sheets, protect access areas, and clean up fully after the work. No disruption to your living areas.

Can you insulate hard-to-access attics?

Yes — we have solutions for low-pitch roofs and tight spaces, including spray foam and partial platform removal.

Should my attic water tank be lagged?

Yes — we supply and fit lagging jackets that fully insulate your cold water tank to prevent freezing and meet grant standards.

Do you install attic ladders or upgrade hatches?

Yes — we supply and fit FAKRO timber attic ladders and can upgrade your attic hatch to a draught-sealed, insulated model.

Is attic insulation suitable for all homes?

Most homes built before 2006 benefit from attic insulation upgrades. If your home was built after that, we’ll survey it to confirm whether it meets modern standards or needs a top-up.

Will I receive paperwork or certification?

Yes. You’ll receive a handover pack with insulation details, photos (if needed), depth verification and grant paperwork where applicable.
